HISTORY

We have a long and proud history, this is the short version.  Whilst times have changed, we are still promoting our Club and continue to have a lot of fun!

In the beginning ….

The Port Broughton Bowling Club commenced preparation of it’s first green in 1935.  By 1937 the greens were ready for business, with our first Men’s’ teams entering competitive bowls.

It was a grueling job that took a few years.

The inaugural President was C.G. Bastian and Secretary was R.D Goodridge.

In 1958 the Port Broughton Womens Bowling Club commenced under the leadership F. M. Farrow (President) and C. Lewis (Secretary).   We continued to operate as separate Clubs under the same roof until only recently.

Our building ….

On 30th September, 1972 (the first stage of) our current building was opened by the President of the Royal SA Bowling Association – L.J. Luke Esq.

We soon outgrew the building and it needed to be significantly extended.  On 28th February, 1986 two life members – Mr. M.K. Duffield and F.W. Schmitt officially opened the building extensions.

The green ….

Our last game on grass (no you’ve been watching too much Crackerjack) prior to the installation of our synthetic green was played at the end of 2013.

It was then time for the last bowls down before the ceremonious spade in the turf.  Highly respected and much loved Club Life Members and stalwarts – Robin Routley and the late Shirley Stringer proudly attended to the official duties.  It marked an end of an era for Port Broughton but the sun was to rise even brighter a few months later.

Synthetic surface ….

The new synthetic surface was installed in May, 2014. The following photographs were of the official opening by Dean Dolling, then Mayor (and active Club member), and speech by Geoff Edwards (Chairman of the Artificial Green sub-committee and powerhouse behind the synthetic green project).  The first Bowl was laid on the new surface by Geoff Edwards after addressing players from the Green (President Glen Washington in the foreground).

Our future ….

We could go on more about our proud 85 years but it’s better if you come to the Club, have a look around the walls to see and read all about our triumphs and goings on since 1935.

Suffice to say we’re a very proud, progressive and friendly club …. check us out yourself, we’d love to have you on board!
